Nadia Belerique’s rolled steel sculptures address spatial perceptions by proposing altered ways of viewing. Belerique has created two powder-coated metal sculptures, both silhouettes whose outlines are derived from movie poster’s cardboard cutouts. Belerique photographs these cutouts from different angles and then produces new cutouts (one resembling a female figure and the other an-oversized drinking vessel) of the re-photographed images. Unlike the original advertisements, these new silhouettes lack any image.

Shannon Bool‘s photograms collage 1920’s fashion documentation and architectural artifacts from Papau New Guinea from a psychoanalytic perspective.  Her departure point is the Pavillion d’Elegance from the International Exhibition in Paris of 1925 where Siegel, a mannequin manufacturer launched the first mannequins that were moulded in an idealized modernist form.  Bool isolates specific figures, mostly seated, and utilizes these forms as vehicles of projection.  Referencing the first spaces of psychoanalytic practice, which were littered with artifacts and stimuli intended to trigger the unconscious, Bool extracts the idealized Siegel figures and fills them with images of New Guinean family shields and Malu boards.  The carefully selected artifacts show architectural elements of the ceremonial men’s houses, some contemporary, which are centers of rituals and rites of initiation and in their whole represent primordial woman.  In combining these seemingly disparate elements, Bool attempts to create spaces of concrete experience, where the artifact and the projection become indistinguishable.

Nadia Belerique was born in Toronto, Canada where she currently lives and works. Belerique received her BFA from York University in Toronto (2005) and her MFA from The University of Guelph in Ontario (2012). Belerique’s work has recently been exhibited in: The Councilor, Gallery TPW, Toronto; Blue Times, Kunsthalle Wien, Austria; “—“, Tomorrow Gallery, New York. Upcoming exhibitions include: The Mouth Holds the Tongue, The Power Plant, Toronto; Are you Experienced?, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario; and I thnk you’re wonderful and so does everyone else, G Gallery, Toronto. Belerique has an upcoming residency at Fogo Island Arts, Newfoudland, Canada. Belerique is the recipient of the BMW Exhibition Prize for the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival (2014) and the Toronto Friends of the Visual Arts Artist Award (2015).

Shannon Bool was born in Comox, Canada and currently lives and works in Berlin. Bool attended the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, the Cooper Union in New York, and graduated from the Staedelschule in Frankfurt (2004). Bool was the artist in residence at the Villa Romana in Florence, Italy (2013). Her work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at: Bonner Kunstverein, Germany (2011); Gesellschaft fur Aktuelle Kunst Bremen, Germany (2010); and currently at the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver. Bool has been  recently included in various group shows: Boom She Boom: Works from the MMK Collection, Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (2015); Screen and Décor, curated by Rosemary Heather, Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge, Alberta (2014); Soft Pictures, curated by Irene Calderoni, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaugengo, Turin, Italy (2014);Girls Can Tell, Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst, Bremen, Germany (2014). Her work can be found in the collections of the Museum fur Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt and the Lenbachhaus, Munich, as well as numerous private collections, including the Saatchi Collection, London.
